3 keys to success for Hogs in Omaha

3 keys to success for Hogs in Omaha

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas is the highest seed remaining among the schools headed to the College World Series that begins Friday.

Arkansas is the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 LSU on Saturday at 6 p.m. and televised by ESPN. Arkansas has never won a national championship in college baseball. Many feel this is the year that changes.

Here's three keys for Arkansas to have success and possibly win it all this year.

Continue Getting Good Pitching

Zach Root is the ace on Arkansas' staff and Gage Wood is now healthy. Both are pitching extremely well. Root was almost unhittable in both the Fayetteville Regional and Super Regional. Wood was better in the Fayetteville Regional, but still gave the Razorbacks a quality start against Tennessee on Sunday. Others such as Aiden Jimenez, Landon Beidelschies and Colin Fisher may be called on to start in Omaha assuming the Hogs continue to advance. The bullpen has been outstanding much of the season including the last five games in postseason. If the pitching continues as it has since the regular season ended Arkansas seems to be in good shape.

Get Clutch Hits

The Hogs have scored a lot of runs this postseason with two outs. Arkansas has a lot of power so expect the home runs to continue, but they need to get clutch hits when runners are in scoring position even if just a single or double. If the pitching continues as it has been in postseason Arkansas shouldn't have to score huge amounts to get a win. Arkansas, in postseason, has scored 6, 12, 8, 4 and 11 runs. They won four of those games pretty comfortably with only the narrow 4-3 win over Tennessee being that close. Similar run support in Omaha should be sufficient for the Hogs to get wins.

Don't Beat Themselves

Arkansas is one of the best defensive teams in the nation. If that continues it certainly gives the Hogs a chance at winning. The pitchers haven't been walking too many opposing hitters. That also needs to continue. If Arkansas can avoid the pitchers walking a lot of hitters and then no errors the chances for a win go up. Arkansas is generally regarded as the best team in Omaha. If they don't help their opponents the chances of winning definitely goes up.
