ADEM recognizes first week of March as Severe Weather Awareness Week
March 2, 2026NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Arkansas Division of Emergency Management (ADEM), in coordination with the National Weather Service, recognizes March 1–7, 2026, as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Arkansas. This week serves as a reminder for all Arkansans to review severe weather safety plans and ensure their homes, schools, and workplaces are prepared for potential spring storms.“Severe weather can strike with little warning,” said ADEM Director AJ Gary. “Taking time now to prepare can help save lives when storms threaten Arkansas.” Tornado Safety Identify a safe place in your home, such as a basement or small interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.Have multiple ways to receive warnings – weather radios, smartphone alerts, and local media updates.If you’re caught outside or in a vehicle, move to the nearest sturdy building immediately. If that’s not possible, lie flat in a low area and cover your head. Flood Safety
Never drive through flooded roads – Turn Around, Don’t Drown . Six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and two feet can carry away a car.Avoid walking through floodwaters, which can hide debris, contaminants, or swift currents.Move to higher ground immediately if flash flooding is possible in your area. Build a Disaster Supply Kit Every household should have a disaster kit containing: Water and non-perishable food for at least three daysFlashlights, extra batteries, and NOAA Weather RadioFirst aid supplies and essential medicinesImportant documents stored in a waterproof containerPersonal items such as clothing, toiletries, and blankets
