Arkansas Hoops Preview vs Troy
By Otis Kirk

FAYETTEVILLE -- No. 18 Arkansas will return to Bud Walton Arena on Wednesday night to play host to Troy.

Arkansas (1-1) is coming off a 72-67 loss to Baylor this past Saturday. Troy opened the season defeating Toledo 84-74 on Nov. 4 and then dropped New Orleans 78-61 this past Saturday. Arkansas Associate Head Coach Kenny Payne provided a scouting report on Troy Tuesday.

"Tough game," Payne said. "Tough team. They shoot the ball well, they’re physical, they create a situation defensively where they create turnovers. They have 11 players, I think, back from last year’s team. They have four guys in double-figures. They are a very good basketball team that we know we have to play well to beat them. Our length and athleticism better be in play. Our attention to detail better be in play. Because this team is a very good team. And Cal has done a great job explaining to our guys that you’ve got to be the aggressor no matter what they throw at us. You better be able to deal with it, and we went over the game plan over and over again to make sure that these guys are ready for it."

John Calipari's Hogs struggled against a zone defense Baylor threw at them on Saturday. Payne was asked if Troy runs a zone or prefers man defense?

"Both," Payne said. "Man and zone. Very aggressive. A lot of pressure on the ball, taking the wings away, denying. A lot of run-and-jump. Even when they’re in the zone, it’s run-and-jump. Three guys will just run toward the ball. You better be able to get in the gaps quick. You better be passing the ball efficiently. You better be strong with the ball because they’ll come at you from any time at any angle, whether they’re in man or zone, and they’re aggressive. They’re aggressive and they play for steals."

Calipari stated on a radio show this week he expects a zone from Troy. He admitted Saturday night the team hadn't prepared for a zone defense prior to Baylor much because of injuries and refused to blame the players.

"First half, it can't be on them because we just haven't worked that much against zone because we haven't scrimmaged," Calipari said. "We haven't had…  we've had five guys for weeks.  Halftime we went in and said, all right, we got to do this way and I think you saw that we moved the ball."

Payne was asked if the team has been able to get some practice time in since Saturday on the zone?

"I think we have to be prepared for them to play zone," Payne said. "I think that we have to want them to play zone so that we show people that we can handle a zone, and the goal is to get teams to not play a zone. You want to play a zone, we burn you, we’re efficient against it, we do a great job against it so you realize you’ve got to play us man where we eliminate the… we play the style of play that we want to play. I expect them to do that. We expect them to do that. Coach Cal has spent the last couple days working on the zone, so we’re ready for it. At the end of the day, it’s how the players digest it, react to it and do it with confidence."

Payne said the Hogs are more able to prepare for facing a zone now that the team is getting healthier.

"Well, the biggest struggle is we’re just now getting players to where we can practice against each other and put things in," Payne said. "For example, it’s one thing to walk through a zone offense. It’s another thing to play against a zone offense and have five legitimate players to play against it. So we’re just now getting to that point, where we’re getting players healthy to where we can go against each other in live situations and react and see the nuances of the zone. Then just the time that it takes. You’re not going to figure out a zone in the first week of the season, second week of the season, second game of the year. It’s going to take time. We just have to know that and be a great passing team, attack the zone, know where the gaps are and not be passive or tentative versus the zone."

Tennessee transfer big man Jonas Aidoo has only seem limited action thus far due to a preseason injury. Payne addressed Aidoo's status.

"Jonas Aidoo is a really good basketball player," Payne said. "He's proven that. He's fought a bunch of injuries. He's getting healthy. We're just trying to bring him along slowly. I expect him to get better and better every day. He's doing his preventative stuff and his maintenance stuff with therapy and such. But Jonas is going to help us. He's going to bring a physicality to this team that we sorely need. He is going to bring rebounding to this team that we sorely need. He's a big guy that, that sets great screens. We just got to continue to allow him to get healthy so that he can help us."

Arkansas and Troy will tip at 7 p.m. Wednesday night. The game can be streamed on SEC+.
