Arkansas State Powers Past No. 6 Arkansas 12-4 with Five Home Runs

FAYETTEVILLE -- Arkansas State used five home runs and outstanding pitching to hand No. 6 Arkansas a 12-4 loss on Tuesday before an announced 9,039 fans.

Arkansas jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a lead-off home run by Maika Niu, but it was all Red Wolves from that point forward. The Red Wolves scored six runs in the top of the second on a solo home run by Aiden Houseworth then three singles and a hit batter before Ashton Quiller unloaded a grand slam over the fence in left center field.

Cross Jumper hit a solo blast in the top of the third and hit a 2-run shot in the seventh. Houseworth had doubled to plate Evan Griffis before Jumper's second home run. Lane Walton hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth and the Red Wolves added its final run in top of eighth.

Kuhio Aloy started the bottom of the second off with a single off starter Andrew Allen. The Hogs loaded the bases and Niu singled to left, but Carson Willis was gunned down going to third to end the inning.

Zack Stewart hit a solo shot for Arkansas in the bottom of the fourth. He added his second RBI in the bottom of the ninth with a single that allowed Reese Robinett to score from second base.

While the Red Wolves pounded out 14 hits they also got some good performances on the mound. Allen went two innings allowing four hits, a pair of runs, both earned, walked two and struck out three Razorbacks. Brett Foss followed Allen to the mound working three innings and picking up the win, his first decision of the season. Foss allowed two hits, a run, walked a pair and fanned three Hogs. Cooper Garrison earned his first save of the season. He worked a masterful four innings, allowing just two hits, one run and striking out three while walking none. The trio combined to allow just eight hits and strike out nine while only walking four.

Arkansas starter Peyton Lee (0-1) took the loss. The Red Wolves roughed him up for six hits, half dozen runs, two strike outs and hitting one batter. Tate McGuire followed Lee to the mound and allowed two runs while striking out three and allowing three hits. Ethan McElvane, a transfer from Vanderbilt, didn't allow any hits and walked only one. Cooper Dossett pitched one inning and allowed three hits and runs. He struck out one hitter. The final Arkansas pitcher on the day was Luke Cornelison who worked a pair of innings. He gave up one run on two hits. He allowed a pair of walks and struck out two. Arkansas' pitchers combined to allow 14 hits, walked three and struck out 10.

Jumper and Cason Campbell topped Arkansas State with three hits each. Quiller and Houseworth each added two hits. The only Arkansas State starter who didn't get a hit was Kaden Amundson. Walton, Griffis, Patrick Engskov and Raul Torres each had one hit. Quiller drove in four runs, Jumper three and Houseworth two.

Arkansas (6-2) and Arkansas State (6-2) will meet again Wednesday at 3 p.m. The game can be streamed on the SEC Network+. Tuesday's loss by Arkansas was the first to an in-state foe since Little Rock defeated them 17-7 on April 2 in 2019.
