FAYETTEVILLE -- No. 12 Texas opened its new arena in style on Saturday defeating No. 10 Arkansas 90-60 in an exhibition game in Austin.

The Longhorns never trailed in the game with Arkansas getting within one point at 10-9 on two Nick Smith Jr. jumpers. Texas opened the game with a 5-0 lead. Texas held a 40-30 lead at intermission. However, Texas went on a 20-0 in the second half to take complete control of the game.

Two of the issues that Eric Musselman talked about after the Rogers State win were turnovers and free throw shooting percentage. Once again, the Hogs turned the ball over 23 times compared to only 13 for the Longhorns. Texas outscored Arkansas 26-12 on points off turnovers. Arkansas got the charity stripe 23 times making 16 of them (69.6 percent). Texas was only slightly better on free throws hitting 14 of 20 (70 percent). Musselman obviously wasn't pleased with the turnovers on Saturday.

"I did say it was going to be an eye-opening experience based on how we've been practicing," Musselman said. "Understanding the veterans on their roster and how hard they play.

"But the turnovers. You have 23 turnovers in a college basketball game it's really going to be hard. We have 11 new guys so we're obviously going to be a work in progress. How far that work in progress gets I don't know."

Texas was much hotter from the field than Arkansas. The Longhorns made 33 of 61 field goals (54.1 percent) and 10 of 16 (62.5 percent) from behind the 3-point line. Arkansas was 20 of 50 (40 percent) from the field while making 4 of 12 (33.3) from deep.

Musselman kept his rotation tight in the first half playing 7-8 players before letting 14 see action by the end of the game. True freshman forward Jordan Walsh led Arkansas with 14 points making 6 of 8 from the field and 2 of 3 from behind the 3-point line. He also added five rebounds, one assist, two steals and a block. Smith Jr. was next with 12 points while also contributing two steals.

Makhi Mitchell had eight points and four rebounds. Joseph Pinion had seven points while Kamani Johnson added six points and half dozen rebounds.

The loss drops Arkansas to 5-1 in preseason games. They won four in Europe in August then topped Rogers State this past Monday night.

Arterio Morris led the Horns and all scorers with 19 points. Texas had three others in double figures.

Arkansas will open regular season on Monday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. hosting North Dakota State.
