No. 8 Baylor never trailed and went on to defeat No. 16 Arkansas 72-67 Saturday night in the American Airlines Center.
The Bears fresh off a 101-63 defeat at Gonzaga used a zone defense to defeat John Calipari's Razorbacks who only hit five 3-pointers in 20 attempts. However, Boogie Fland hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left to pull the Hogs within 70-67. Did Calipari feel the Hogs were winning at that point?
"When I’m coaching, the only thing I’m thinking about is how we win the game," Calipari said. " When he made it, it was like, okay, how are we winning this thing? First half, it can't be on them because we just haven't worked that much against zone because we haven't scrimmaged. We haven't had… we've had five guys for weeks. Halftime we went in and said, all right, we got to do this way and I think you saw that we moved the ball.
"The reason Scott (Drew) stayed in it [the zone] and that he should have, we look so bad against the zone. Why would you get out of it? So second half, I thought we did it… I thought we fought. We never gave up. We gave ourselves a chance. We took five bad shots at critical times and you're trying to explain to the players, they're not bailing you out, so go in there to make the shot or pass it to somebody. If you go in like throwing your body and then hit the floor, they're not calling those. A breakaway, we lower his shoulder. Just swing the ball out. Couple of those… Playing to win. The last rebound, my guy looked and their guy ran by and grabbed the rebound. That was the game, the ball game, but those are all correctable, even zone offense, all correctable. This showed me some good stuff. We got a lot of work to do. I still think my team's pretty good. Gotta make a shot or two [raises voice]. You don't have to make them all. You just can't miss them all. We gotta make our share and we got good shooters. We really do. So work to do, but we'll see.
However, two free throws by Baylor's VJ Edgecombe with 14 seconds remaining allowed the Bears to escape with the win. Fland knew his shot from distance gave the Hogs a chance to get the victory.
"I mean, just staying composed," Calipari said. "Staying poised, staying disciplined, and trying to come out with the W. It didn’t happen, but you know, we’re going to look past it and we’re going to move on."
Of Arkansas' five treys, Fland hit three while Adou Theiro added the other two. No other Razorback hit one. Fland had 17 points, 5 rebounds and dished out 7 assists. Theiro led the Hogs with 24 points while adding 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal.
"I mean, it felt good," Fland said. "I know I’m a shooter. I’m going to keep shooting. It really doesn’t phase me. I’m going to keep going. We’re going to keep going."
Fland was quick to give credit to Theiro, the Kentucky transfer, for his play.
"I mean, he’s been doing good," Fland said. "Just playing within the team. Not doing too much. Just getting to his spots where he knows he can hit shots. He’s just being a big factor for this team."
Arkansas struggled defensively particularly early on. Were the Hogs letting their offense compound on defense?
"It led some breakouts," Calipari said. "We had a couple loose ball turnovers, which they are really good in transition to give them that opportunity, they go. I thought Adou was terrific and fought the whole time. There were some pick and roll issues we had and they took advantage of it. Our bigs were… We’re not in sync yet, where we'll be, but in the second half, we did some good stuff. We gave ourselves a chance. We pressed a little bit, showing, okay, maybe this is something we can do. That's what you're trying to do in these games. This is November. They're a top 10 team and we come down and give ourselves a chance. The kids did give us a chance to win."
Calipari was asked if he was surprised by Drew going to the zone against his Hogs?
"No, no," Calipari said. "No. I’ve coached against Scott. He’ll go to that 1-1-3. He’ll even go to a 1-3-1. He’ll… No, he does it. The press they used, we all knew what they were doing. We have our zone stuff in, but we’re trying to get our man stuff in. This is a brand-new team. These guys never played together. But we got organized and they came back and they did their thing."
Calipari said he talked to the Gonzaga coach this week amid knowing his team was going to face a mad Baylor team Saturday night.
"Mark Few and I talked and I said, ‘Well, thanks. I appreciate you doing that. So now I’ve got to play them,'" Calipari said. "We knew they were going to be alert. They lost that game and now they’re coming back here, they played good. They did some good stuff."
Despite the loss which evened Arkansas' (1-1) record on the season Calipari will use this game to learn more about his team.
"A lot," Calipari said. "Like, you could play a team and try to win by 50 and what you learn is that you can beat that kind of team by 50. But the teams you’re trying to compete with are like this team, like a Kansas. These kind of people that we’re playing, and then playing them away from our building is important too. To, okay, you don’t have the home crowd riding you, can we come together and do this? And let me say, I want to thank all the Arkansas fans because they were crazy. Half the building was Arkansas people. I’m just disappointed we didn’t win, but I hope they say they fought, they tried, they’re doing some good things. I can see they have a ways to go but it’s a good group."
Both D.J. Wagner and Johnell Davis scored eight points for the Hogs. Trevon Brazile chipped in four more points. Tennessee transfer Jonas Aidoo is still trying to get healthy. He played nine minutes, but wasn't a factor.
Jayden Nunn was one of five Baylor players in double figures with 16 points while Norchad Omier had 15 points and 12 boards. Jeremy Roach had 13 points, Edgecombe 11 and Robert Wright 10 off the bench. Baylor (1-1) evened its record with the win.
The Hogs will be at home on Wednesday night to host Troy (2-0) at 7 p.m.Â
