CAPES RESPONDS TO DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE ARTICLE
Little Rock– In response to the article in today’s Democrat-Gazette, Citizens for Arkansas Public Education and Students (CAPES) makes the following statement:

Most organizations have growing pains, and CAPES is no exception. The goal of CAPES has always been to put the LEARNS Act on the 2024 ballot, and to leave labels and political affiliations behind. Our goal has been and continues to be to not only have discussions across the aisle, but to bring everyone into the aisle to support public education and students. In ongoing discussions, one director wanted to take the organization into a direction that did not align with our stated mission. Unfortunately, the discussions came to interfere with moving forward, so there was a parting of ways that was not as amiable as all would have liked.

As a result, the CAPES organization temporarily lost access to several electronic platforms, including its Google Drive, which contained pertinent member information. CAPES regained control over its digital assets, but there was a slight lapse of CAPES administering oversight. At the time, we were told in writing no data was collected or stored outside of our current systems.  In migrating to its new website and social platforms, CAPES immediately put multiple systems in place so we could ensure this would not happen again.

In regard to crossed-out signatures, most of those were done in the field when canvassers discovered the signer was not a registered voter or the signer realized a mistake and resigned on the line below.

No further comments will be made at this time.
