Cherry Stewart announces resignation from Hempstead County Quorum Court in March meeting
The Hempstead County Quorum Court was brought into session Thursday at 4:30 p.m in the courthouse. The two items of business were the passage of resolutions declaring two vacancies on the court.

The meeting can be seen in its entirety just below this article.

Troy LaRew announced his resignation as Justice of the Peace for District 6 last month. A resolution declaring the vacancy of his seat was passed by unanimous roll call vote.

Cherry Stewart announced her own resignation in this meeting and spoke on the priorities she hopes the continuing Quorum Court members will keep.

"I will not ever be able to say what it has meant being with people that I have watched care and do
for a county that I think is absolutely second to none. I don't want to leave Hope, but I need to do that, and it's going to be fine. But would you all please continue to look at things as you do and work just as hard as you can?

"I'm still concerned about us trying to save the building of the old courthouse that we promised the constituents that we would tear down, that that money could have been a grant, could have been secured. But I wanted to look at that very closely. When they start asking y'all for money. I want to go look hard when we find it somewhere else. But I don't think the county, we promised them, we would not do that."

Stewart compared her stand on the old courthouse to a stand she took while serving on the Hope Advertisement and Tourism Commission to have trees that were leaning cut down.  She also praised the quorum court's work in moving the county's offices and archives to the new courthouse on East Third to a renovated building that had housed Farmers Bank & Trust but was purchased by the county.

"On the courthouse. I am so proud of how we all worked and supported our town to help. This has helped Hope. I don't know whether you all feel that way, but this has helped Hope, Arkansas and just have fun. Stay together. Worship your Lord on Sunday. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. "

The resolution to declare her District 2 seat vacant passed by a unanimous roll call vote but JPs of both the Republican and Democratic Parties said they did so with reluctance.

As a result of the declarations of vacancy, the court has 30 days in which to name replacements to serve out the terms of Larew and Stewart, both of whom were elected as Republicans.

County Judge Jerry Crane asked that those attending send their prayers for Road Superintendent Richard Kidd and his family who lost their house in a recent tornado nine miles south of Hope.

The meeting adjourned about 10 minutes after the meeting began.
