Reimagined plaza to create a welcoming communal space for residents and visitors

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Dec. 20, 2024) — The Little Rock Convention & Visitors Bureau (LRCVB) has announced the renovation of B. Finley Vinson Plaza, located in front of the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton on West Markham Street in Downtown Little Rock. Led by WER Architects, Jones Development Company, and EDG Landscaping, phase one of construction will begin on the existing fountain area Dec. 23, 2024, and is scheduled to be completed by early May 2025. This project aims to reimagine the public space with modernizations to its existing structures and deliver a more open concept to create an engaging, communal space for hosting visitors and residents.

The future plaza will boast fresh green space, public seating, and space for hosting live music and entertainment. City leaders hope it will enhance the riverfront stretch for hotel guests, residents and event attendees, paving the way for even more vibrant and memorable experiences in Downtown Little Rock.

"We’re excited to see Finley Vinson Plaza reconceptualize as a vibrant hub for community connection and entertainment,” said Gina Gemberling, president and CEO of the LRCVB. “This renovation will transform the space into an inviting destination where visitors and locals can immerse themselves in a richer experience, all while tapping into the inviting energy that makes our city a thriving destination."

The development is aligned with goals identified by the LRCVB’s 10-year Tourism Master Plan, which outlines a strategic roadmap for growing Little Rock’s economy through the tourism industry. Of the plan's top nine priorities, placemaking, product development, and community engagement are specifically tied to the plaza, and directly represents the LRCVB’s continued focus on thoughtfully designed spaces that inspire public engagement.

Named for B. Finley Vinson, a former Little Rock Advertising & Promotion Commission chair, and a visionary behind the Statehouse Convention Center, the Excelsior Hotel (now the Little Rock Marriott), and many of the city’s iconic spaces, the new plaza builds on his inspiration for the growth of the city.

"Through a strategic vision for our city, we are poised to transform these public spaces into core gathering places that will showcase Little Rock’s warmth and energy," said Mayor Frank Scott, Jr. "These revitalized areas will not only foster connection and community but also serve as catalysts for economic growth, attracting visitors, enhancing the quality of life for residents and driving our city toward an even brighter and more prosperous future."
