Courthouse Tax Town Hall Schedule Set

The Hempstead County Quorum Court and County Officials will be traveling to communities throughout Hempstead County in January and February to answer the questions and concerns the community has about the proposed $0.01 sales tax to fund completion of renovations to the for Farmers Bank building to serve as the new courthouse.

The tax, approved recently by the Quorum Court, will only go into effect if approved by voters during a special election which will be held at the same time as the primary election on March 3, 2020.

The county officials decided to hold town hall meetings in each community to make the case for the tax which they say will be temporary and will go to finance the construction needed to get the courthouse relocated to its new downtown location and to demolish the existing courthouse, which is in a state that many county employees attribute to respiratory and other issues they have developed over time while working in it.

If you would like to express your opinion and get your questions answered concerning the tax and the relocation of the courthouse, county officials would like you to attend any of the town hall meeting held around the county. Judge Crane and several J.P.’s repeatedly expressed that they want to be transparent with the public and are eager to get their input.
