As the Prescott Curley Wolves prepared to emerge Friday night from a 16-day layoff and play the Class 3A Fordyce Redbugs, who jumped to its new class after playing in three state title games in three years, Prescott Coach Brian Glass explained what his team did with the time.

The last time the Curley Wolves played was in its season-opening August 23 win at War Memorial Stadium when it struggled at times early against a plucky Bismarck, only to run away with the second half.

“The challenges with a long layoff are keeping the players in shape, keeping them sharp, and keeping them hungry without pushing them too hard during that time. We feel like we had the perfect mix of football and conditioning during the off week,” Glass said.

Prescott (1-0) will be taking on a team in the Redbugs (1-1) coming off a 42-24 home win against the Monticello Billies. The Redbugs lost this season’s opener against the Monticello Billies 28-36, but in 2021 had a ten-win year. Like Prescott, Fordyce lost its championship game.

Coach Glass offered a balanced assessment of his upcoming road opponent. “The Fordyce strengths are size and speed. Defensively they are very athletic, and on offense they have the ability to go from the Wing T or I to a spread look. The weakness is that they have a young team.”

Glass said he looks forward to what a win would accomplish for his program, which is hoping to return to the championship game this season and win this time. “A win at Fordyce would be a great victory for our program and would be a good measuring stick on how we have progressed since week 0 [against Bismarck].”

The game will kick off tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at Fordyce High School’s Paul “Bear” Bryant Stadium.
