The Prescott Curley Wolves Baseball Team defeated Smackover, 4-1, last night at the 3A Regionals in Ashdown, earning them a place in the upcoming State Tournament. The Curley Wolves scored early in the game when Jayce Moore got a hit in the first inning and remained the only one on the board until the fourth inning when Smackover scored one, creating a tie. Then, in the fifth inning, the Curley Wolves rallied, scoring two more runs in addition to an imposingly deep homerun by Carston Poole, bringing the score to 4-1. The Curley Wolves stoutly defended and maintained their score the rest of the game, in large part due to the pitching prowess of Pierce Yates, in what his coach says is one of the best games he's ever had. His seven innings only allowed the opponent one run on three hits, and he accrued ten strikeouts.
Coach Gavan McCauley said he was thrilled with the performance of this team and is excited to see what happens next. "I was proud of the guys last night and how they played hard and battled a close game the whole time," McCauley said. "Pierce Yates was outstanding on the mound and pitched an unbelievable game. Carston Poole brought that spark, like he has all season, when he made that homerun, his 11th of the season. I am looking forward to seeing what happens with the rest of Regionals, as well as the State Tournament." McCauley said with Yates' impressive pitching, Poole's inspiration, and the entire team's wholehearted dedication, the Curley Wolves are more than ready to face any opponent at the state level.
The Curley Wolves will now finish out the tourney in Ashdown to determine the winner of the Regional Tournament, as well as seeds for State. The boys compete against Ashdown today at 12:30pm, and the winner of that game will play the winner of the Genoa v. Haskell game for the final game. Then, the boys travel to Harrison on Thursday to begin the 3A State Baseball Tournament.
