Emergency responders thought they were responding to rescue an entrapped child in a rolled over vehicle Thursday night but what they found instead was a 63-year-old woman who was allegedly intoxicated behind the wheel of a car she didn't have permission to take.

The Hope Police Department, Hope Fire Department, Hempstead County Sheriff's Office and Pafford EMS were dispatched to the East Beech St. near the intersection of North Edgewood after a call came in for an overturned car with a child trapped inside. When they arrived on scene, they found a white Nissan Sentra, but there was no child inside. Instead they found 63-year-old Thelma Deloise Levingstonbrunson behind the wheel, unable to climb out of the car, which was stuck in the deep, narrow ditch.

The Sentra ended up in the ditch after Levingstonbrunson apparently failed to negotiate a right turn off of North Edgewood onto Beech. The car swung wide, entering the north ditch facing east with both driver-side tires stuck in the mud and the driver side of the car against the ground.

Firefighters and medics helped Levingstonbrunson out of the car. Officers questioned her briefly before placing her under arrest for DWI. When they made contact with her niece, the car's owner, they were told that Levingstonbrunson did not have permission to take the car and had taken the keys and left with it while her niece was in the shower.

Levingstonbrunson was transported to the Hempstead County Detention Facility for refusal to submit, DWI, driving on a suspended license and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
