Extension Homemakers Host Chamber Community Coffee Celebrating 110 Years of Service
The Hope Hempstead County Chamber of Commerce Community Coffee was hosted this week by the Hempstead County Extension Homemakers, bringing together local residents, community leaders, and volunteers for refreshments, conversation, and fellowship.

Those in attendance enjoyed light refreshments while visiting about current events and learning more about the wide range of programs offered through the Hempstead County Cooperative Extension Service.

The coffee also served as a celebration of a major milestone, 110 years since home demonstration agents were first assigned to Hempstead County.

“We’re recognizing 110 years that home demonstration agents have been serving Hempstead County,” said Terrie James, Cooperative Extension Service Family and Consumer Sciences Agent and staff chair. “In 1916, the first female home demonstration agent, Dauphine Cap, came to Hempstead County and started the home demonstration groups, which we now know as Extension Homemakers.”

In honor of the Extension Homemakers, the event also highlighted the contributions of Master Gardeners, 4-H groups, and community volunteers who support Extension programs throughout the county.

James shared updates on several upcoming programs and classes offered through the Extension Office, located at 1800 East Third Street in Hope.

“We have a variety of programs and classes scheduled this year,” James said. “Our beginning crochet class already has a full evening session, and we’re working to fill a daytime class and possibly open another evening class. We also have a jam and jelly workshop coming up, a ServSafe class, and our Master Gardeners’ major spring seminar on February 23rd at Hempstead Hall.”

Residents interested in participating in Extension programs are encouraged to contact the Hempstead County Extension Office at 870-777-5771 or follow the Hempstead County Cooperative Extension Service on Facebook for the latest updates.

Chamber Executive Director Christy Burns expressed appreciation for the Extension Homemakers’ long-standing commitment to the community.

“We are thrilled to be able to host today’s Community Coffee and celebrate the incredible impact the Extension Homemakers and Extension Service have had on Hempstead County for more than a century,” Burns said. “Their dedication to education, service, and community involvement truly makes a difference, and we are grateful for all they do.”
