It was popular. At 9:30 a.m. there were already about a dozen attendees ready to partake of the fruit, sausage and tater tot casserole, coffee cake, tortilla chips and dip, apple punch and, of course, coffee that the students had prepared.Â
The coffee comes during national FCCLA Week, which the Prescott chapter has observed. Monday was FCCLA Member Monday, with the students each drawing jackets with decorations for the respective student’s interest. Tuesday was a Day of Service, in which several members went to Charlotte’s Rose Flowers and Gifts to help that business on a busy Valentine’s Day Eve.Â
Wednesday was Family and Consumer Science Educator’s Day, which saw the chapter’s members express gratitude to teachers. The coffee was this morning, and Friday will be Spirit Day which will see FCCLA members dress in the red and black colors of the organization.Â
After the members serving at the coffee each introduced themselves, with most saying their favorite thing about FCCLA was forming relationships with their fellow members, Linda Benton, sponsor of the Prescott High FCCLA chapter said participation in the organization helps the students become more comfortable working within a group. “Most of these girls don't interact with a whole bunch of people, but they have built a relationship,” Benton said.Â
The chapter, said Benton, will be putting on a fundraiser soon to raise funds for a trip to the FCCLA state conference in Hot Springs April 10th-11th.Â
Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jamie Hillery said she enjoys going to the annual FCCLA coffees and knows the organization plays an important educational role. “I'm glad that the students come out every year in this community copy on and showcase you know what they've learned and they do the public speaking which I know is difficult, but I love that they do it,” she said.Â
