JACKSONVILLE, ARK. — Today the Democratic Party of Arkansas welcomed former Republican candidate Nick Priest’s support for reelecting Rep. Mark Perry.

Priest, a former Republican candidate for State House District 66 in Jacksonville and other parts of Pulaski County, announced he is supporting the Democratic Party of Arkansas candidate after ending his campaign due to a cancer diagnosis.

"As a centrist, I was initially encouraged to run for this seat under the belief the Republican Party of Arkansas was aiming to build a big tent Party-one that could expand the voting base and embrace a broader range of perspectives," said Priest. "However, since my withdrawal, I no longer believe that is the direction the Republican Party is taking. I do not feel that Wayne Ball reflects the true values and interests of District 66,” Priest said.

Mr. Priest’s support was welcomed by Chair Grant Tennille.

“We’re proud to be a big tent party that welcomes centrists like Nick Priest to the table. He believes in our shared values of honoring the dignity of all people, the freedom to decide when to become a parent, and the fiscal responsibility represented by the Democratic Party of Arkansas,” Tennille said.

“Arkansans are rejecting MAGA extremism and Donald Trump’s circus tent version of politics. As a reminder, you don’t become a Democrat just because you vote for one,” Tennille said.
