Prescott's Carston Poole #16 passing to Eric Grigsby for a long completion in his team's first possession of the second half Friday night against the Homer Pelicans in Homer.

With the conference title on the line, the 7-0 (3-0) Prescott Curley Wolves will host Friday night a team whose name fits its identity, the Smackover Buckaroos, who arrive with formidable size on their offensive and defensive lines, at the quarterback, running back and tight-end positions and an undefeated conference record.

Prescott Head Coach Brian Glass respects that size and knows its details. “Their tailback’s 6-1, 230. He’s a big kid. He’s going to be a load. The quarterback’s got some height, 6-3. He’s probably around 200 as well.”

On the other hand, Smackover, 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference, does have one vulnerability. “The biggest thing that they have going against him is they don't have a whole lot of depth. They've got a lot of kids playing both ways. As far as the kids that they have on the field, they've got some good athletes,” Glass said.

To meet those athletes, Glass said his team’s morale is at a high for the season after having bested one of Louisiana’s state champion teams in a road game last week at the Homer Pelicans in a 9-0 slugfest, without having any of Prescott’s players hurt. “They're very confident. We feel right now we will beat anybody. That's a good thing this time of year that you are that committed. They believe that they can beat anybody on the schedule. Injurywise, we came out of that game, as hard hitting as it was, we came out of it relatively healthy. So no, no injuries to report.”

Anyone consuming broadcast sports media in the Ark-La-Tex was also treated to several highlights from the Homer game, which is what the Curley Wolves aspired to. “We were hoping to create a buzz a little bit with an Arkansas versus Louisiana flavor to it. And I think it lived up to its billing. Those guys are the defending state champions down there in class A, which they, would probably be a 3A school here. And, you know, they just were super athletic, hard-hitting, and every yard that was gained was paid for on both sides. And both defenses were doing some hitting,” Glass said.

Glass urged fans to come out to Wolf Stadium tonight to catch a contest for the 3A Region 5 title and to salute the senior class of 2023 at the night set out for its honor. “We hope that we'll have a great turnout to show their appreciation for these guys. They've done a lot for our program. They were undefeated as seventh graders are undefeated as eighth graders, ninth graders and they've only had two losses in their career here. One loss as sophomores and one loss last year. They're hoping to end it with another undefeated season. So far so good.”

Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night, and the game will be broadcast on SWARK.Today live.
