The sixth grade class at Garrett Memorial Christian School hosted their annual community coffee this morning in the gym section of the school. Local citizens and city officials came out to visit and many took the opportunity to tour the school. Refreshments were sweet and savory; cookies, brownies, donuts, muffins, banana bread, pinwheels, pigs in a blanket and much more. Coffee, along with a sweet summer punch was available for those needing to quench their thirst.
Donna Marlar, a sixth grade teacher at GMCS talked a little about the annual coffee and how proud she is of the students, "This is an annual event for the sixth grade class. They host it every year. I am very proud of them. I just turn it all over to them, parents provide the food, they set it up, serve it and give they give the tours. It's theirs, I just supervise.
Marlar went on to add that she was happy to see such a great turn out after yesterday's postponement due to inclement weather.
Christy Burns, Director of the Hempstead County Chamber of Commerce was present and said, "I am so pleased that community coffees are picking back up and citizens are able to gather to network. It's vital to this community that we all support one another." Burns also expressed pride in the students and was impressed with the tours given throughout the facility.
