Gomez and Fortlage Named All-Americans

FAYETTEVILLE – Sophomores Gerardo Gomez and Erich Fortlage were named honorable mention All-Americans, it was announced today. Gomez was honored by Golfweek and PING/GCAA while Fortlage joined Gomez on the Golfweek squad.

Gomez and Fortlage become the 15th and 16th Razorbacks to be named All-Americans in the 20-year tenure of head coach Brad McMakin. Those 16 players have earned a total of 24 All-American honors. Overall, Gomez and Fortlage are the 28th and 29th Arkansas men’s golfers to be named All-Americans.

Gomez and Fortlage were previously selected PING/All-Central Region and second team All-SEC. The two tied for the team lead with four top-5 finishes, being the low man for a round 13 times and being the low man for an event five times.

Gomez led the team in scoring average at 70.67, which ranks fourth on the UA season list overall and the second-best scoring average by a Razorback sophomore. His season scoring average was bolstered by Gomez shooting below par in 13 of his final 15 rounds of the season and shooting under par in 18 of his 24 rounds in the spring. He led the team by being 24-under-par for the season while ranking second on the team in top-10 finishes (4), top-15 finishes (6), top-20 finishes (7) and 22 rounds at par or better. Gomez has a two-year scoring average of 71.67, which currently ranks third on the UA career list.

Fortlage set a Razorback record with 26 rounds at par or better this season. He additionally had 13 rounds in the 60s this season, tying for the team lead and tying for third on the UA season list (with two players tied for first at 14). He led the team with six top-10 finishes, seven top-15 finishes and eight top-20 finishes. His four eagles and 128 birdies led the team. Fortlage’s 70.67 season scoring average was second-best on the team, which is sixth on the UA single-season list, and his two-year scoring average of 71.70 currently ranks fourth on the UA career list.
