FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green was named Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week and running back Braylen Russell was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week following their performances in a 58-25 victory at Mississippi State on Saturday.
Green was phenomenal in the Razorbacks’ second SEC road win of the season, completing 23-30 passing attempts for 314 yards and a career-high five touchdowns while rushing for 79 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. He was the first Arkansas quarterback to throw for five touchdowns and rush for a touchdown in a single game since Ryan Mallett accomplished the feat against UTEP in 2010. Green’s five touchdown passes are tied for second-most nationally in a single game this season, and he is one of two Power 4 quarterbacks to throw for five touchdowns and rush for a touchdown in a single game this season, joining Cade Klubnik of Clemson. It also marked the 13th time in Green’s collegiate career that he had thrown for at least one touchdown and rushed for at least one touchdown in the same game.
Russell rushed for a game-high and career-high 175 yards on 16 carries for an average of 10.9 yards per carry during the victory. He became the first Arkansas freshman to rush for 175 or more yards since Darren McFadden ran for 187 against South Carolina on Nov. 5, 2005. His 175 rushing yards are the most in a single game nationally by a freshman running back this season. He also became the 11th player in program history to rush for 100+ yards against Mississippi State. Russell is just the third Arkansas freshman since at least 1998 to rush for 150+ yards in a single game, joining 2013 SEC Freshman of the Year Alex Collins and 2005 SEC Freshman of the Year Darren McFadden.
The selections mark the fifth and sixth SEC weekly honors this season for Arkansas. Previous honorees include: Fernando Carmona, who was named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week twice (Week 1 and 6), defensive back TJ Metcalf, who earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week during the fourth week of the season and quarterback Malachi Singleton who earned SEC Freshman of the Week distinction during week six.
Green is the first Razorback to earn SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors since Raheim Sanders on Nov. 22, 2022.
The Razorbacks return to Donald W. Reynolds Stadium this weekend for an 11 a.m. showdown with No. 19 Ole Miss on ESPN. Arkansas has won five straight over Ole Miss at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, with the last loss coming in 2008.
