Hamilton Haven Enters Year 5 of Service, Looks to the Future
PRESCOTT — An idea which sprang from faith and prayer has turned into a welcoming place for those in need of short-term temporary emergency housing, and an example of a community coming together.

Hamilton Haven, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization which opened in April 2020, has had those prayers answered.

The first neighbors were hosted in the wake of Hurricane Laura, a major storm which made landfall near Lake Charles, Louisiana in August 2020.

The term “neighbor” signifies an important part of the Hamilton Haven team’s vision.

“We want those we serve to feel like part of the community,” said Hamilton Haven executive director Michele Hamilton Rhodes.

A series of house fires in the Prescott area late in 2017 was the impetus to purchase and begin renovations of an older dwelling on East Second Street.

“The house probably should have been torn down, but it was as though God wanted us to have it,” Rhodes said.

No facility existed in the area for those who needed temporary shelter.

Renovations began in April 2018, with enthusiastic support of many who supported this vision with their dedication, energy, finances, skills, and time.

“It’s been amazing to see how God has blessed us,” said assistant executive director Christy Higginbotham.

What’s next for Hamilton Haven is ongoing updates to another location in Prescott.

“We’re calling this Phase II,” Rhodes said. “The idea is to welcome those who may need extended time to go from crisis to stability.”
