FAYETTEVILLE -- For the first time this season, the Razorbacks will enter a game coming off a loss.
Unfortunately for them, it's also the first road game of the season and also opens SEC play. The opponent is No. 12 LSU and that obviously isn't an easy task.
True freshman tight end Luke Hasz caught four passes for 78 yards and a touchdown against BYU.
"Nobody likes losing, especially with all the work we've put in and the time that we spend trying to win," Hasz said Tuesday. "Just going and starting this week strong. We've been practicing really well. I think it's great, but we've moved on from it."
Safety Alfahiym Walcott, who transferred in from Baylor, had three tackles this past Saturday. He also talked about moving on from a loss.
"Me personally, it's hard," Walcott said. "No one likes losing, so it's hard. And we knew we should have won, but you just have to move on. I don't really have nothing else to say besides you have to move on and look forward to the next week because that team is still preparing for you, and you still have to go out there and play to the highest level. Our season is far from over with, so I know we're still good."
During Tuesday's practice, Arkansas had very loud noise blasting over the speakers. Walcott knows the Hogs expect a lot of noise in Baton Rouge on Saturday night.
"Knowing we're going into a venue that's over thousands and thousands of people, we have to get hand signals down because you're not going to be able to really communicate verbally," Walcott said. "It's really hand signals and trying to be on the same page throughout the week. Using that sound in practice really helps us to get ready for that."
Hasz signed with Arkansas for experiences like this. LSU will mark his first road game in college. The former four-star recruit out of Bixby, Okla., is looking forward to it.
"Oh, I'm excited," Hasz said. "It's going to be a great atmosphere. There's going to be a lot of people, and it being a night game is going to be really special as well. I'm definitely excited this is my first one."
The Razorbacks had 14 penalties for 125 yards in the loss to BYU. Many came on the offense and Hasz talked about how to avoid such things this week.
"I'd say it's for sure listening to our coaches because we have a really great coaching staff who is really good on the details in practice," Hasz said. "So, for my position personally, just keeping our hands inside and ultimately trying to keep playing clean but do what we do."
Walcott also talked about how to avoid penalties knowing 14 penalties this week will lead to a blowout loss.
"As a DB, our coach is going to let us know right as it happens," Walcott said. "So, even if we have reps out there or not, the coaches are going to let us know whether it's a penalty or not. We just need to eliminate that as a whole."
Most of the 14 penalties on Saturday night were legit, but a few left observers scratching their heads. None more than the offensive pass interference on Hasz that completely changed a drive.
"I was definitely shocked," Hasz said. "But at the end of the day we can all do things a little better to make it not for the refs to throw a flag. I can work on going back and watching that play and figuring out what I did wrong or why I gave him the opportunity to throw that flag. That’s something we can work on."
It came in the first quarter. KJ Jefferson passed to Hasz for a big gain. However, the Big 12 officials called offensive pass interferenc on what appeared, at most, to be incidental contact. The call pushed the Hogs back to a third-and-24 play at their own 42. Was it just incidental contact? Sam Pittman answered that question.
"It sure was," Pittman said.
If no penalty Arkansas has either a first down or fourth and short.
"We wouldn’t have had third and 20-something," Pittman said.
Jefferson also appeared to get speared on a run just before halftime, but no flag.
"You said it," Pittman said. "I mean, I'm going to get fined guys. I appreciate the question."
Can you get fined for commenting on officials outside the SEC?
"I don’t have any idea," Pittman said. "I don’t know. I don’t want to chance it. … But yeah, I mean … Yeah."
The Hogs and LSU will kickoff at 6 p.m. on ESPN Saturday night. The Texas A&M game will be at 11 a.m. in Arlington on Saturday, Sept. 30. It will air either on ESPN or the SEC Network.
