Hempstead County Circuit Clerk Race Ends in Deadlock; Recount Underway
In a stunning turn of events, the race for Hempstead County Circuit Clerk between candidates Gail Wolfenbarger and Becky Hood ended in a perfect tie last night, with each receiving exactly 1,168 votes. The deadlock has triggered an official recount to determine next steps.

Hempstead County Election Commissioner Debbie Marsh confirmed that the election commission has called for a recount of the votes. The results of that recount are expected to be completed later this afternoon.

However, the recount is just one part of the process. According to Hempstead County Clerk Karen Smith, provisional and UOCAVA (Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act) ballots have yet to be counted. The results from the provisional ballots are not expected to be known until after 11:30 a.m. on Monday.

Both Smith and Marsh clarified that if the race remains a tie after the recount is finished and all outstanding ballots are officially counted, the two candidates will face each other again in a runoff election on March 31st.

Reacting to the rare outcome, both candidates expressed a sense of surprise, tempered with gratitude for their respective supporters. Gail Wolfenbarger commented on the shock of reaching election day without a definitive result after a long campaign season, but emphasized that she is "very proud of the support she's had." Becky Hood conveyed her own surprise at the tie, adding that she was "so pleased with the turnout of her voters" and extended her thanks to everyone for their support.

With elections often ending in broad margins, the dead-even result in this local race serves as a powerful reminder that one’s vote does count. And in times like this, one vote can make all the difference.
