Hempstead County Historical Society features presentation based on Joshua Williams' book
On the projection screen at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Hempstead County Historical Society, attendees were treated to photos of Hope legends from bearded, stern Walter Shiver, the Union soldier born in Ottawa who liked what he saw when his regiment occupied the area and then returned as a permanent resident and founder of the city, to jovial C.M. “Pod” Rogers, who restarted the Watermelon Festival in 1976.

Joshua Williams, Curator at Historical Washington State Park, presented a program based on his book in the Images of America series simply titled Hope, which draws upon photos from archived collections as well as contributions from private citizens.  Being able to enlarge the photos and place them on the big screen allowed for the spotting of details of cars, people and buildings not otherwise as visible.

The meeting, which took place in the Tailgaters restaurant annex room, was the third in a year of monthly meetings devoted to commemorating the 150th anniversary of Hope’s founding.  Membership in the Hempstead County Historical Society is $10 per year.  Meetings take place beginning at 7:00 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Williams also announced that the city of Hope and the Hope Parks Department are organizing a Hope 150th anniversary event to take place Saturday, April 12th. starting at 10:00 a.m. with vendors setting up downtown and then including a parade at 2:00 p.m., bands performing, free burgers and hot dogs from Farmers Bank & Trust and a fireworks show from the City Hall lawn. All are invited.
