In their August regular meeting, the Hempstead County Quorum Court took three actions:
Approved unanimously by voice vote a continuation of the use of Courthouse Capital Improvement funds for the scanning of County Clerk's account books.
Approved unanimously by voice vote again an ordinance to allow for the payment of $5,000 bonuses to sheriff's deputies in accord with the state legislature's allotment of state funding for the purpose.
Approved unanimously by voice vote again a resolution that allows the Circuit Clerk to apply for funding from the Arkansas Circuit Clerks Association's CRCF Grant Funds.
In the category of Other Business, the Court was told by Drury Hoover, a resident of the county, that the county road she had requested be resurfaced in the Court's June meeting had been resurfaced. "I hardly got home," she said, from the June meeting,"And it was fixed. I want to thank you all, particularly [Justice of the Peace] Steve Atchley and [County Judge] Jerry Crane. I thought, 'It's beautiful.' It's even black-topped. I never even dreamed of that."
Next, Terrie James, Staff Chair at University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, Research and Extension, Hempstead County. updated the Court on the progress of a voter's guide, the draft of which, she said, should be completed next week. She said the recently approved 1/4 of a cent sales tax to finance the recruitment of new businesses and industry to Hempstead County would be in the guide as well as other measures to appear on the ballot for the November 8 election.
James also invited all to the Health and Wellness Expo to take place in Hempstead Hall on the UAHT campus. Health screenings will be available. Adults are encouraged to attend between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Adults with children are welcome from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
James introduced Betty Wingfield, 4-H Agent, who, in turn, introduced two senior 4-Hers, Freya Dowell and Cora Townsend who, with Kassidy Beasley, comprised the first place interior design team at the state 4H-O-Rama in Fayetteville. Dowell and Townsend showed designs for their team's vision of a coffee shop named Coffee Time.
