A small welter of ordinances were voted on in Thursday evening’s Hempstead County Quorum Court meeting. All but one passed.
An appropriation ordinance to provide two deputy treasurers with bonuses for filling in for County Treasurer Judy Flowers during her absence due to contracting COVID failed for lack of a unanimous vote. Justice of the Peace Steve Atchley voted present, with all others voting yes.
An ordinance to provide for a quarter of a cent sales and use tax to be collected in Hempstead County, the proceeds to be used toward attracting new business and industry to the county.
An ordinance to provide for a special election for voters to approve or not approve the quarter cent tax. Voters would make this choice on the November 8, 2022 ballot.
An ordinance to participate in a program in which county jail inmates would pick up litter and the state would reimburse the county for its costs. This would restart a program that past County Judge Haskell Morse had started.
An ordinance to move county funds within the overall budget. More specifically:
That the amount of $32,560.00 shall be transferred and appropriated within County General Fund, Entity 1000, from account number 1073100 Quorum Court Other Miscellaneous to Civil Defense Other Miscellaneous 5003100.
That the amount of $39,526.95 shall be transferred and appropriated from 991 Fund, Entity 3020 to County General Civil Defense, Entity 1000-500, as follows:
$38,758 from 3020-5014005 Vehicles to 1000-5003100 Other Miscellaneous.
$359.52 from 3020-5012001 General Supplies to 1000-5003030 Travel.
$76.25 from 3020-5013030 Travel to 1000-5003030 Travel
$333.18 from 3020-5003030 Meals & Lodging to 1000-5003030 Meals and Lodging.
Note: A correction was made to this story to reflect that the ordinance to provide bonuses to deputy treasurers who worked in the stead of County Treasurer did not pass. A previous version of this story had the ordinance passing.
