No. 14 Arkansas, the No. 4 seed in Western Regional, defeated No. 12-seed High Point 94-88 Saturday night to advance to the Sweet 16.
The game was close the entire way with Arkansas' largest lead, 28-20, coming in the first half. Darius Acuff Jr. was outstanding once again. He scored 36 points and dished out six assists. Fellow freshman guard Meleek Thomas added 19 points. John Calipari praised his two freshmen guards following the game.
"They have confidence in who they are and what they are...the reality of it is, these two, they're special, both of them," Calipari said.
The game saw 15 lead changes. The last lead for High Point came with 7:04 remaining when they went up 72-71 on an Owen Aquino field goal. However, Malique Ewin followed with a field goal and then Thomas nailed a 3-pointer for a 76-72 lead with 6:11 remaining in the game.
Rob Martin, who led High Point with 30 points, made a basket with 3:19 remaining to tie the game at 83. However, Acuff then went on a 7-0 run to give the Razorbacks a 90-83 lead with 1:03 remaining in the game.
Arkansas struggled from deep in the win over Hawai'i, but on Saturday night they hit 56% of their 3-pointers making 9 of 16. High Point made 10 3-pointers, but shot 38 in the game to finish with 26% from deep. The Razorbacks shot 51% from the field to 45 for High Point. Arkansas was 15 of 20 from the charity stripe. High Point only missed one free throw in 11 attempts.
Arkansas held a narrow 43-42 lead at intermission. Billy Richmond III had another big game. He had 15 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Arkansas once again played without Nick Pringle. Malique Ewin stepped up again and added 14 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Trevon Brazile finished with eight points, eight rebounds and four assists. D.J. Wagner scored two points to complete Arkansas' total.
Cam'Ron Fletcher, who Calipari recruited when at Kentucky, chipped in 25 points and eight boards off the bench for High Point. Terry Anderson had 15 points, five rebounds and six assists.
Arkansas will now play the Arizona-Utah State winner. Those two teams meet Sunday night at 6:50 p.m. on truTV.
