It will be No. 10 Arkansas taking on No. 2 St. John's on Saturday at 1:40 p.m. in the West Regional in Providence, R.I. and televised on CBS.
Fresh off its 79-72 win over No. 7 Kansas and Bill Self now the Hogs will face Rick Pitino's St. John's team. St. John's defeated No. 15 Omaha 83-53 on Thursday night. St. John's (31-4) won the Big East this season as well as the conference tournament. Pitino talked about facing the Hogs and Calipari.
"I'm talking about disliking each other rival," Pitino said. "John was at Kentucky, at Louisville. It's normal. I have always had great respect for John. We have not seen this size and athleticism all year. Creighton has a 7'2" center but athleticism wise, we have not seen this this year. We know what we're up against, obviously. They had a lot of injuries, that's why they opened up 0-5. I don't know where they finished in the SEC... eighth or ninth. I'm glad we're not in the SEC. That talent level in that conference is amazing to me."
Pitino was asked if he enjoys a chess match against Calipari?
"I don't go against coaches, we go against teams," Pitino said. "He doesn't have to worry about me. My jump shot is long gone. We're preparing for his players. He's preparing for our players. John and I don't play one on one anymore."
In the win over Omaha, St. John's was led by RJ Luis Jr. with 22 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Simeon Witcher chipped in 13 points, Kadary Richmond 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Zuby Ejiofor had 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
Luis, 6-7, 215, a forward, leads St. John's in scoring this season averaging 18-5 points per game. Ejiofor, 6-9, 240, a forward, tops the team in rebounding 8.0 and blocks at 1.4 per game while scoring 14.4 points each outing. Richmond, 6-6, 205, is a guard who sits at top of St. John's in assists per game 5.4 and 2.1 steals. Witcher is a 6-4, 190, guard.
The one time St. John's faced an SEC team this season was on Sunday, Nov. 24, when Georgia topped them 66-63. The Razorbacks beat the Bulldogs 68-65 on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
