The video of the meeting in its entirety can be seen at the City of Hope's facebook page.
One of the videos was a one-minute version. The other was about five minutes. The first one showed a series of images of happenings and scenes in Hope, while the other showed more images and scenes with the narrator joined by several Hope residents, including Jamie Pafford-Gresham, CEO of Pafford and Mayor Don Still, who sits on the tourism commission as one of three city board representatives, and other speakers describing the lifestyle and infrastructural advantages of locating in Hope.
After the presentation, Powell said the videos will appear during programming on Fox and CNN and other cable networks and links to them would be sent to those expressing interest in locating in Hope. She said footage on the video was contributed by SWARK.Today and University of Arkansas Hope Texarkana. Photography by Viewpoint Project will also be made available for use.
Commissioner Steve Montgomery, a city board member, asked about the contract with Viewpoint. Powell said it would last one year after the first airing of the videos. Commission chair Sharon Caldwell asked if a press release would be forthcoming prior to the first airing. Powell said she would find out.
In other business, the commission reviewed a financial report provided by Parks Superintendent Summer Chambers. Mayor and Commissioner Still, seeing that expenses related to upkeep of the Coliseum was up, asked whether the Southwestern District is contributing to funding these. Chambers said, “We cover all maintenance fees and get all rentals,” prompting Still to say, “We’re getting the short end of the stick.” Chambers agreed.
Also discussed were plans to place a veterans memorial in the city. Still said he had seen the new memorial in Conway, which impressed him and said it would be helpful to see photos of veterans memorials in other Arkansas towns. He said he would nominate some committee members who would be charged with considering a design.
Hope has been approached to take part in a fitness campaign, Powell said. The other commissioners agreed with commissioner and Hope city board member Trevor Coffee that the Parks office was managing a lot of programs now and did not need to overextend itself.
Talk of the Sparks Fly in July event at the Hope Municipal Airport included the decision by Chambers to open the grounds at 5:30 p.m. this year, half an hour earlier than past years so that traffic coming in could be better managed. Three bands will perform. So many vendors expressed interest that some had to be placed on a waiting list for future Fourths. Discussion also seemed to resolve that the event would occur Saturday July 5th even should there be rain.
The meeting adjourned 30 minutes after it was called to order.
