Hope Water & Light Public Safety Notice: Safe Generator Use During Power Outages
As the threat of bad weather continues, Hope Water & Light would like to stress the importance of following best safety practices when connecting your home or business to an emergency generator. As more residents rely on emergency generators during outages, proper use is essential to protect both households and utility crews working to restore service.

Prevent Backfeeding

Backfeeding—when generator power flows back into utility lines—can be deadly for utility workers and can damage equipment.

  • Never plug a generator into a wall outlet.
  • Use only a properly installed transfer switch to connect a generator to home or business circuits.

Carbon Monoxide Safety

  • Never run a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces like garages or sheds.
  • Keep generators at least 20 feet from buildings, away from windows and doors.
  • Use carbon monoxide detectors and watch for symptoms such as dizziness or nausea.

General Safety

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Let the generator cool before refueling.
  • Keep it dry and on stable ground.
