Prevent Backfeeding
Backfeeding—when generator power flows back into utility lines—can be deadly for utility workers and can damage equipment.
- Never plug a generator into a wall outlet.
- Use only a properly installed transfer switch to connect a generator to home or business circuits.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
- Never run a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces like garages or sheds.
- Keep generators at least 20 feet from buildings, away from windows and doors.
- Use carbon monoxide detectors and watch for symptoms such as dizziness or nausea.
General Safety
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Let the generator cool before refueling.
- Keep it dry and on stable ground.
