Hornets Hold off Late Surge from Nevada for 90-87 Win
Blevins- All eyes were on this matchup between the #3 Blevins Hornets and #4 Nevada Blue Jays on Tuesday night, as this game was crucial in the conference with each team entering with just one loss in league play.

The building was packed, and it was standing room only with the entire game played with both sides of the gym dialed into the game from the opening tip to the final buzzer. Nevada got out to a fast start, as they held a 14-7 lead at one point in the first, but Blevins got going and took a lead into the break, which turned into a halftime lead. In a first half in which a lot of fouls were called, each team had multiple players in foul trouble, and that led to a very high scoring second half, as defensive stops were at a premium.

The Hornets built up a 15-point lead with a little less than five minutes left in the game, but the Blue Jays stormed back and got within one point with six seconds left on the clock. A lane violation and a bucket at the end for the Hornets gave them the 90-87 victory, all but sealing a conference title for Blevins.

After the game Xavier Bazzelle marvelled at the atmosphere: "It was crazy. It was the most packed gym I've ever played in. Nevada came out and played hard. We love this environment." As did Bazzelle himself, having scored his 2,000th career point on Tuesday night.

Four Hornets were in double-figures on Tuesday night, as Xavier Bazzelle led the way with a team-high 20 points. Bazzelle added six rebounds. Sean Rohan poured in 19 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Both Javi Gomez and Rilee Faulkner scored 13 points. Gomez added seven rebounds and three assists, while Faulkner had six boards and three assists. Jaxon Hinton and Paul Antley scored eight each and Jemiyan McMorris scored seven big points for the Hornets. Kaden Powell added two.

After the game, Blevins Coach Ethan Dixon spoke on the win, "We've been preparing for this one. We did a good job establishing a lead. We rebounded better this game than the last one. It got close at the end, but we did a good job coming out with the win. Tonight was a great environment"

Rico Aparicio for Nevada led all scorers with 27 points, as he got off to a hot start and did not really cool off, showing he can score at all levels of the floor. Aparicio knocked down five threes. Kobe Hughey scored 18, had five rebounds and five assists. Keyonte Wingfield poured in 17 points, grabbed seven boards, and dished out five assists, with most of his points coming in the second half. Monti Mixon was in foul trouble early and did not play much, but still finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. Taco Roberson had seven points and eight rebounds, Tre King scored five, and Hurk Burns added four.

Coach Beck had praise for Nevada's effort, though it fell just short of the win. "We did a great job fighting back down 15 with four minutes left. If we keep fighting like that, the big wins will come, but the big thing for us tonight is missing 21 free throws, You're not going to win a lot of games shooting that poorly from the line. We're going to fix that and get back at it Thursday in Kirby."

This is more than likely not the last time these two teams will face off this season, as these teams appear to be two of the top 1A teams in the region and the state. It was a great showing from the crowd last night; the building was electric, and experience performing in that environment will help each of these teams in the next month as tourney time nears.

Blevins heads to Umpire tonight for a conference game, and Nevada will head to Kirby on Thursday night.
