Multiple organizations and members of the community turned out to participate in Hope’s first ever Juneteenth Celebration at Northside Park today. The festivities kicked off with a parade that started at Yerger and traveled through Hope until it reached Northside Park. Once there, food, music, games, and fun were on the agenda and the park was filled with area residents visiting and children playing.Â
The event was organized by Silent Voices, Women of Power, and Sons of Solomon #2. Nick Wyatt, one of the event planners from Sons of Solomon #2, said they were thrilled with the response from the community. “Once Juneteenth was signed into law, we wanted to plan a celebration like many other communities have,” Wyatt said. “We are very excited about this great turnout, especially since this is the first one. We appreciate our police departments, Sylvia Brown, Hope City Board Director Reginald Easter, and all of these groups who came out to support the celebration today.” Numerous citizens could be heard expressing their appreciation to event planners for this day of celebration.
Organizations like A State Corvette Association, RSAT, and the Hempstead County Branch of NAACP were there to support and participate in the festivities, in addition to local vendors who turned out, some with Juneteenth memorabilia. The HPD was in attendance, as well, with goodies and games for the kids. “These events are important so we can build a positive rapport with the community, as well as build the next generation of law enforcement officers,” said Justin Dean, HPD’s Community Outreach Officer.
HCSO brought their Mobile Command Center, a bounce house, goodies and games for the kids, as well as hot dogs with chips and water. “The more bridges we can build with the community so they can see us as not just law enforcement officers, but also as neighbors and friends, will result in stronger and better relationships with everybody,” said Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton.
Other events slated for the day include a dance-off, music by DJ Baccside, and motivational speakers who will address the audience regarding the topic of gun violence. With a full day of fellowship and community camaraderie, in addition to the collaboration and participation of so many citizens and organizations, the inaugural Juneteenth Celebration can undoubtedly be called a success.
