It's a blue Christmas at the PPD, but the fun kind!

Many local children had a blue Christmas in Prescott this morning, but not because of sadness or an old song. These kiddos visited the boys and girls in blue at the Prescott Police Department (PPD) for fun, food, and presents during the PPD's Blue Santa event held inside headquarters.

The room was overflowing with families who chatted with officers while sampling the hearty meal provided by the PPD, and the children were filled with delight as they eagerly, but patiently, waited for the main event. However, many of these youth appeared just as excited to have one-on-one visits with real, live police officers as they were for presents and fun. Mayor Terry Oliver was on the scene to lend a helping hand, and he proudly and cheerfully sported his blue Santa hat, too, the same as PPD officers.

Chief Ann Jordan shared with SWARK.Today what motivates the PPD officers to plan and enjoy events such as these. "For some, the holidays can be a struggle," Jordan said. "Whether they have lost loved ones or are just having hard times and can't get presents for their children, we want to help lift that burden. We want to take some of that off of them and help as much as possible. In everything we do, we just want to make a positive impact on our community."

The newest member of the PPD and recent ALETA graduate, Patrolman Mae (Mems) McKinnon, said today's event was a great example of what inspired her to become a police officer. "I knew this department would be more community-oriented," McKinnon said. "I served in the National Guard and retired after 24 years. I was looking for a family when I got this job, and the PD has become my family. Being there today to present the gifts to the kids, and seeing the smiles on their faces and their parents faces, made everything better for me. It gave me a sense of what my purpose is and what community policing is all about."

Around 60 children received presents at Blue Santa this morning, and all of them left the building with a happy smile. Thanks to the Prescott Police Department, having a blue Christmas is certain to become an event that they will anticipate with joy and excitement.
