The girls bought into what Coach Rook and Coach Martin were wanting to do and they surprised a lot of people this season by winning the Central Regional Tournament and advancing to the State Championship the next weekend. They ran into a tough matchup in Hillsdale on Friday afternoon as the Lady Saints fought hard but came up just short in the end. In the second half, the Lady Saints played much better and cut the lead down to 5 points at one point in the third quarter. Hillsdale always seemed to have an answer, however, and GMCS fell just short as they lost the game late, 43-34 in a very slow-paced game.
Laikyn Mitchell finished the game with a team-high 23 points, Laikyn also added 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Gracy Martin scored 7 points, had 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Mikayla Fields scored 6 points and grabbed 10 boards and dished out 5 assists. Mikayla was also tasked with trying to handle the girl from Hillsdale who had about a 6 inch height advantage on Mikayla. Evan Chambless played great on-ball defense and also grabbed 5 rebounds, Silbi Jones came in and had 4 rebounds, and Charity Zumwalt added 4 rebounds and 2 assists, and played great defense throughout the game.
The Lady Saints end their season as the HCAA Class 1A Runner-Up. This is a special group of seniors who also finished Runner-Up in Volleyball as well. It's not every day you have a group come through that competes in State Championships in multiple sports. Congratulations on a great season for the Lady Saints.
