Lady Saints Have Sights Set on State Championship this Week
Hope- The Lady Saints took care of business last week, as they won the Central Region Championship in Hot Springs Village with a 45-42 win over Mountain Home in the semifinals, then topped Legacy 74-71 in the Championship game on Saturday. Playing two very competitive games in their regional tourney will definitely pay dividends this upcoming week, as they have proven to be able to win close games down the stretch. Garrett is sitting at the 1-seed for the State Tournament, which gives them a first-round bye (bracket posted below). I spoke with Gracy Martin of GMCS this week on the importance of having the #1 seed and a first-round bye, “It’s really important and it makes our road to where we want to get to more favorable, which is a state championship.” Gracy has been shooting the ball very well as of late, including knocking down eight 3-pointers in their two Regional Tournament games. By earning the bye in the State Tournament, the Lady Saints only have to win two games to claim a State Title, where the other schools need to win 3 games.

“It’s pretty awesome that we have made it to the State Tournament as the 1-seed, but there is still work to be done, we need to clean-up some things to make sure we end this season with a State Championship,” Laikyn Mitchell said this past Monday as we spoke on their opportunity to win a championship. Laikyn and teammate Mikayla Fields have a great high-low game working on the offensive end, along with the shooting of Gracy, and the ball handling and playmaking of Evan Chambless and Charity Zumwalt had this offense firing on all cylinders this past Saturday in their 74-point outburst against Legacy. Great play from Baylee Pogue and Silbi Jones, which both came off the bench to score multiple buckets and grab some key rebounds in the game. “Our communication has improved this season, but that and our chemistry is always something that can improve. We have a good thing going right now and we need to keep pushing towards our goal of a State Championship,” Guard Evan Chambless said when asked about the teams chemistry leading up towards the tournament.

The Tuesday games have ended as I am currently typing this preview up, so the Lady Saints know now who they will be playing in the State Semis. GMCS will face The Cross on Thursday night, with tip-off scheduled for 7pm. The winner of that game will play the winner of Liberty and Hillsdale on Friday for the State Championship at 12:30. Good luck to the Lady Saints!!!
