FAYETTEVILLE -- Junior defensive end Landon Jackson drew a lot of praise from Sam Pittman following Saturday's scrimmage.Â
Jackson, 6-7, 269, transferred to Arkansas from LSU prior to last season. He was injured at LSU and didn't really factor in there. However, the former four-star recruit from Texarkana (Texas) Pleasant Grove is healthy now and can be a force for the Hogs this fall. Pittman talked about his performance on Saturday in more detail.
"I thought Landon Jackson had as good a day as he's had since he's been here," Pittman said. "I thought he was so impressive. I think if you look back, Landon had come off an ACL. He was tall and thin. I mean, he was skinny.Â
"He was playing about three quarter speed and he got a little bit better as the year went on. Now he’s bigger, confident, long. He’s a problem, now. A good problem. He’s on our team, but he’s a problem if you’re an offensive lineman. It’s just his speed and his size right now that…I mean, he’s been hard to block."
Following Thursday's practice, Jackson talked about what was working for him on Saturday.
"I would say we were really just getting to the quarterback and playing good ball all around," Jackson said. "All around just kind of flowing. Our new defensive schemes are fitting very well. It all just kind of worked out Saturday."
As far as the specifics, Jackson went into more detail on what he liked about Travis Williams' defense.Â
"I would say just having four d-linemen on the field at all times," Jackson said. "It really allows us to get to the quarterback more. And that's probably the biggest thing in my eyes."
In addition, Jackson talked about Pittman saying he was at three quarter speed last fall.
"I definitely agree with that," Jackson said. "I feel like once the bowl game came around I got a lot more confident in my abilities, in the knee, in the playbook. [Arkansas was] just getting a more confident football player all around, and I feel like that’s allowing me to finally play like I know I can play."
Arkansas is deep at defensive end and that is something that impresses Jackson.
"I like it a lot," Jackson said. "I mean, I feel like it we’ve got enough guys to where if somebody gets banged up one game, we can just put the next in, and there won't be a major fall off. So, I think it'll allow for us just… I mean, I feel like it'd be a lot like last season. I think we had 42 sacks last year. And I think it’ll be a lot like that again. And I feel like that all starts with obviously with Coach T-Will., but then Coach (Deke) Adams, as well. Coach Adams works us like crazy and indy. And I feel like our pass rush is naturally getting better. And then, our ends this year, I feel like we’ll be able to stop the run a lot better, too, and setting the edge really well."
In addition to all the returning defensive ends, Jackson praised Trajan Jeffcoat from Missouri and John Morgan III from Pitt. The two signed and enrolled at Arkansas at midterm.
"I feel like both of those guys can really rush the passer," Jackson said. "And I mean, we just brought in this new package today, and it has John and ‘Tree’ on the end and then me and Stew on the side. And I feel like it's a really dirty package. It's just four ends that can eat, getting after the quarterback. So, I feel like they bring a lot of leadership. They’ve both got some age with them. And then, they bring a lot of knowledge. Like sometimes I pick their brain and just ask certain questions on the game. And I mean, I've gotten really cool with those guys. I hang out with them every day. So I mean, I'm really glad they joined us."
Arkansas will return to the practice fields on Saturday. The spring game is Saturday, April 15.Â
