Local VFW Post Renamed to Honor WWI Veteran and Silver Star Recipient SFC Ricardo Young

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8671 proudly announces the name of the Post has been changed from the Leo Mann Post (World War I veteran) to the new name: Leo Mann-Ricardo Young Post.

At the name changing ceremony held on June 6th, 2026, over 200 attendees heard about Sgt First Class Ricardo Young and his life, which ended on August 28th, 2013, in Afghanistan. On that fateful day, SFC Young, who was in charge of a movement of 35 soldiers in total, encountered pro-American Afghan casualties along a route he was tasked with clearing. After taking care of the wounded, SFC Young's unit took fire from insurgents. After suppressing that fire, SFC Young led 7 soldiers up a hill to ensure the insurgents were in fact gone. As the unit moved up the hill, they came under fire. SFC Young, noticing several his soldiers were pinned down, maneuvered to draw fire away from those soldiers, and in the process was killed. For his incredible bravery under fire, SFC Young received the nation's second highest award for valor, the Silver Star.

SFC Young was the last soldier from Arkansas to die in the Global War on Terror that had been fought in both Iraq and Afghanistan. His name is now on the Memorial at the Nevada County Courthouse, placed on the granite and marble site by Memorial Arts, located in Texarkana. Memorial Arts donated their time and skills free of charge because of SFC Young's example to others in protecting American values.

Again, Post 8671, the Leo Mann - Ricardo Young Post is humbled by their selfless sacrifice and proud to bear their names.
