Nevada County Quorum Court eliminates trash tax, hears about Prescott School District controversy, jail profit shortfall, etc
The Nevada County Quorum Court's regular August meeting began with discussion of the financial report from Treasurer Lorelai Hale.  The county still has yet to receive $53,000 from the state for jailing inmates from other counties but it has received two payments on the 5th and 10th of this month.

The meeting in its entirety can be seen in the video just below this article.

Sheriff Danny Martin said that because the jail cannot keep temperatures between federally-required 70 and 78 degrees due to an air conditioning system needing repair it cannot fill the jail to capacity with anymore inmates from other counties  This has resulted in the jail's receipts from the state being down.

The system is awaiting fixes. County Judge Mike Otwell reported on the progress of this. Martin said as soon as it is fixed the jail can acquire more inmates so the county jail can again be profitable. He said he was making contact with other counties who send inmates to make sure they are paying the bills Nevada County sends them.

Next, County Extension Agent Stacy Stone offered his report.  Dana Fincher is replacing Dianne Wolf who has retired. The local quiz bowl team has had success. County fair preparation is ongoing.  Registered forester training has occurred over this past month at Hempstead Hall in Hope. Stone reported that about 35 kids are involved in Prescott's livestock education program.

Valarie Cobb introduced herself as new Nevada-Prescott Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.  She provided the Justices of the Peace with a schedule of events.

The County Judge reported on the status of road repairs.

Next, the JPs discussed and then voted in favor of doing away with the county trash tax effective December 31, 2025.  JP Regina Irizarry was the one vote against.

In the next item, the JPs voted in favor of an ordinance to extend a $179,724.02 bank loan from Bank of Delight that was used to buy a trash truck that came due August 3rd for six more months, adding monthly payments of $3,108 to the total starting in September.

Lorelai Hale, as required by state law, read from the text of a Legislative Audit Review report that found several discrepancies, including in bookkeeping and adhering to regulations concerning bidding out the purchase of a truck.  No action from the court was required after.

Attorney Rowe Stayton spoke of a controversy occurring involving rumors about irregularities with the Prescott School District Board.  He said a school board meeting which will allow for 90 seconds for individuals wishing to comment will occur Thursday evening August 21st.  He said he didn't think it likely the court would need to become involved in the controversy.  Eighth District North Prosecutor Ben Hale, who acts as the County's Attorney, said it was best that the court not declare a position on the controversy until procedures came to the point of it having to.
