Nevada County Quorum Court Special Meeting Today

Nevada County Quorum Court Special Meeting Today
The Nevada County Quorum Court has called a special meeting today at 5 p.m. at the Nevada County Courthouse in Prescott.

The purpose of the meeting is to address the trash collection fee passed in December. According to Judge Glass, when the vote was held during the December meeting, one member of the court had to leave early and the resulting vote was a 4-4 tie among the other eight members. Judge Glass cast a tie-breaking vote to approve the fee. During Tuesday's meeting, the court voted to lower the annual rate for the trash collection from $120 per year to $100.

However, according to Judge Glass, after consulting with the county's lawyers, they were made aware that the County Judge could not cast a vote to break the tie. Therefore, the court is meeting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 16 to readdress the trash collection fee and to vote on it again.

If it passes, Nevada County residents will be billed $100 per year, payable at the Tax Collector's office, for trash collection. The fee was originally introduced, according to Judge Glass, to cover the increasing costs of having the county's trash transported landfill near Nashville. As of January 1, the cost of the county has gone up $50 per load and will increase another $50 in January of 2021.

The Special Meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in the courtroom at the Nevada County Courthouse in Prescott and is open to the public.
