One|24 Salon in Downtown Hope, has announced that they will be giving free haircuts to all students on Aug. 9 from 8 am to 6:30 pm.
In a Facebook post announcement, Brooke Moten, a local stylist who came up with the idea, said that she will be accepting donations only. Those contributions will all go towards buying children back to school clothes and shoes. There will be an area at the event where children in need can sign up to enter a drawing. After all donations have been made, names will be drawn out of a jar to buy the items for them.
"I hate for kids to have to start back without basic necessities," Moten said. "I want everyone to start back equal the best that they can like all the other kids."
There will also be an area for backpacks where children in need can take one. If backpacks still remain after the event is over, Moten says that she will check the surrounding schools to see if there are any more students that need them.
"Thank you to all who have already donated to this cause," Moten said in her Facebook post. "Please help me make some children feel special this school year by donating if you feel led to do so, by sharing this post, and sharing about the event by word of mouth."
Moten also said that free snacks will be provided by Little Teapot Bakery and Priscilla’s Cookies, all locally owned businesses. They will be donating cookies, cupcakes and One|24 will have juices as well to go with the snacks. There will also be a backdrop for parents to take picture of their kids' with their new back to school haircuts.
"This is the first year we've done this, but I plan to do it every year from now on and hopefully every year will get bigger and bigger, that's my plan," Moten said.
