This morning's Chamber Community Coffee at the Prescott Nevada County Library was hosted by the Organization for Youth Education in Agriculture, or better known around town as OYEA. Guests were treated to delightful spread of both sweet and savory treats, including the very popular sausage that OYEA sells locally for their fundraiser.
OYEA President Fred Harris said he and the students were thrilled to host today's Coffee. "We try to be visible and participate in any activity taking place around town," Harris said. "We have a lot of support from the community and this event is a good way to thank our supporters, as well as get our name out there to those who still don't know who we are."
Harris and OYEA students also brought a few displays that highlighted important aspects of the organization: photos of students with the animals, a written history of the organization, a sausage fundraiser pricing sheet, a list of OYEA supporters and Legacy Partners, and more. (See pics below). They also brought an ice chest filled to the brim with their highly-requested sausage, just in case a guest or two decided to purchase some OYEA products from their sausage fundraiser. More than two could be seen asking for a portion.
Eighth grader Ainsley Rothenberger has raised two hogs with OYEA and had this to say about OYEA's hosting of the event today: "This is pretty nice; I like it. We want to show people that the kids really care about this." Rothenberger was joined by 7th grader Haylie Pickett who has raised a lamb and a pig, 7th grader Dacey Faulkner who's raised a hog, and 6th grader Jermeire Puriofy who's raised a pig and a rabbit. While they might have a wide range of ages, interests, and backgrounds, they all shared the same sentiment that being a part of OYEA has taught them a great deal about agriculture, specifically the raising, showing, and business of animals, and has also been a lot of fun.
