Prescott Drainage Project to be completed within the year

The Prescott Drainage Project will assist with areas like these where erosion has affected the water drainage.

The City of Prescott and the Economic Development Office (EDO) for Prescott/Nevada County have reported that the Prescott Drainage Project is estimated to be in completion by the end of the year. In 2022, the organizations partnered with the Southwest Arkansas Planning and Development Office to address the drainage issues on Hayes, Arnold, East 3rd, and East Laurel Streets. Working together, they applied for and received a $300,000 non-matching grant from the Arkansas Economic Development Commission to be used in these areas where erosion has caused many issues with drainage.

A.L. Franks Engineering from Texarkana is currently working on the design phase of the process, and after design is completed, construction is soon to follow. EDO Director Mary Godwin said that they estimate the project will be finished by the end of the year, weather permitting.

Mayor Terry Oliver said that he and the City Council are looking forward to the completion of this project. "We're glad that we are now able to address this long-standing issue for citizens." Oliver said. "The Economic Development Office has been a great help to us by researching grants and securing the funding for the drainage project, and we believe the residents of Prescott will be pleased with the outcome."

Godwin said that she, her fellow EDO members, and the Economic Development Board of Directors were glad to be able to participate in the drainage project. "The City Council and Mayor Oliver communicated with EDO and shared with us the different needs they have seen in the community; one of those was the drainage issue" Godwin said. "One of the many roles of our partnership with the city and county is to seek out, research, and find grants that will assist with these needs. In a small town, we have limited funds so we have to be able to utilize these grants to make our community better. We look forward to the completion of another successful project for the City of Prescott!"

Since the Economic Development Office was created in 1998, the organization has procured over $22 million in grants for the City of Prescott and Nevada County.
