Prescott rallies for its seniors amid funding cuts
In Prescott, the Senior Citizen Center is more than just a building; it is a hub of fellowship, a source of comfort, and for many, a daily lifeline. Now, that lifeline is under strain. Due to the government shutdown, the center has lost critical funding, forcing it to close its doors one day a week and leaving some of the community's most vulnerable members without a vital hot meal.

The impact of the closure is a heavy weight on the heart of the community. "For some of them, that’s the only hot meal they get every day," said Anita Jones, the center's Site Manager. The Prescott Senior Center provides meals for up to 45 seniors on any given day, along with essential transportation to and from the facility. This funding crisis is not isolated to Prescott; nine other centers across Southwest Arkansas are facing the same difficult reality, putting the well-being of countless seniors at risk.

But as is the way in Prescott, when a challenge arises, the community responds with compassion and action. The center has always been about connection as much as nutrition. "It’s more than about the food, it’s also about giving them fellowship," said Julie Oliver, who participates in events at the center like bingo and singing. She is also part of the new fundraising efforts. This spirit of fellowship is now the driving force behind a grassroots effort to bridge the funding gap.

Community members are coming together to ensure no senior goes hungry. Groups like Friends and the WIP (Women in Prescott) are organizing to raise money to provide meals on the day the center is forced to be closed. The effort showcases the generosity that defines the town. Mandy Marcum of Bright Images has donated a photography shoot, with raffle tickets being sold to raise funds. It's a testament to a community where everyone pitches in to take care of their own, especially a generation that needs to be looked after.

The center itself has issued a heartfelt plea, explaining the gravity of the situation:

"For many of our senior citizens the meal that we prepare, whether it is congregate or home delivered, isn’t just lunch – it’s a lifeline. Right now, we are in a crisis. Our mission is at serious risk. Because of the current government shutdown, the funding stream we depend on has been interrupted. Without immediate support, we will be forced to reduce or cease services – leaving our seniors hungry and isolated when they need it the most."

The statement continues with a clear call for support:

"Every dollar you give goes directly to food, supplies, delivery logistics and the staff/volunteers who make it possible. When you give, not only are you providing a meal. You are preserving dignity. You’re preventing loneliness. You’re making sure our older neighbors are seen, valued and supported. A donation of $50 helps to feed one senior five meals, and $250 provides meals for that one senior for a month."

For those who wish to be part of this vital community effort, every contribution matters. To donate funds or food, please call Anita Jones at the Prescott Senior Center at 870-887-5119. Once again, the people of Prescott are proving that the strong spirit of their community is founded with an unwavering commitment to taking care of one another.

Below is the press release issued by the Prescott Senior Center

For many of our senior citizens the meal that we prepare whether is congregate or home delivered isn’t just lunch – it’s a lifeline.  At Prescott Senior Center, we provide a nutritionally balanced meal for the senior citizens in our county.  We reach our homebound seniors who rely on us for nourishment, dignity, and human connection.  Right now, we are in a crisis.  Our mission is at serious risk.  Because of the current government shutdown, our funding stream we depend on has been interrupted.  Without immediate support, we will be forced to reduce or cease services – leaving our seniors hungry and isolated when they need it the most.

Here is where we are:

We need your financial support.  Every dollar you give goes directly to food, supplies, delivery logistics and the staff/volunteers who make it possible.  When you give not only are you providing a meal. You are preserving dignity.  You’re preventing loneliness.  You’re making sure our older neighbors are seen, valued and supported.

Please consider a donation of $50.  The $50 helps to feed 1 senior 5 meals, $250 provides meals for that one senior for a month.

Thank you for helping us in our mission – Serving Seniors with Dignity – one meal at a time.
