The Hope Housing Authority is a public housing agency that provides affordable housing for up to 380 low and moderate income households through its Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) and Public Housing programs. Materials were available for those interested in becoming a HCV Landlord that described the program and specifications. The Housing Authority has also been in the process of renovating some of the homes, and pictures of the remodeled homes were on display at each table.
Director, Zach Hicks talked about progress within the agency and projects that they have been working on, "This last year has been challenging but also rewarding. We've met a lot of the metrics that we intended to meet. We got to about 98 percent occupancy on public housing. We have grown our HCB program to the point that HUD put us in what's called shortfall, which means there was more than was expected, so we got extra money to pick up the slack. On the downside of that, we can't issue any more vouchers right now, but it grows. It’s slow but steady."
He continued to talk about projects being worked on. "Over at our Yerger complex we're probably 98 percent done with the exterior renovation, an 850,000 investment and [at] Kelly Holmes, we're working through some issues over there. Basically, our whole goal has been progressed, right? We can't really change all these things overnight, but the staff has been amazing. We've had incredible support from the City of Hope and from our Little Rock field office. We couldn't have done it without them. Another thing that we did accomplish with the city was [that] we got some wastewater issues with billing resolved so that has been taken off our tenants. So that's been great. We get feedback from [Hope City Manager] J.R. Wilson, telling us good job and good words, so that's been pretty rewarding. We are just continuing to move forward."
Lastly Hicks spoke about growth in unity in our community, "One other thing I did want to say was I'm I'm proud to see that after the election last night that everybody seems to be taking interest now in trying to reinvest in Hope. That's what we're doing for housing, it is good to see, and we want to be a part of it in any way that we can. So we are real happy to see that moving in a positive direction."
Executive Director of the Hope Hempstead County Chamber of Commerce, Christy Burns said, "The strides that the Hope Housing Authority has made over the past year are phenomenal, and I am very proud of their commitment to our community."
