LITTLE ROCK - Arkansas Democrats are thrilled that President Joe Biden has nominated one of the nation’s most outstanding legal minds, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, to the Supreme Court of the United States, and the first African-American woman in its 232-year history.

“As I read that only 70 Black women have served as federal judges in American history, I was struck by the fact that it’s only 2% of all judges total, a number most people have likely never considered. President Biden’s nomination for our next Supreme Court Justice resonates in a very different way. How many more little girls will now know they can…because she did? How many young African American natural debaters will dream bigger because she will place her hand on a Bible and recite an oath that only 103 people have taken before her.

Our nation’s highest court deserves the most qualified individuals, of impeccable character, serving on the bench. Judge Kentanji Brown Jackson is the right person to serve our nation and I am encouraged by President Biden’s nomination,” said DPA Vice Chair Nicole Hart. “It is not lost on me that Judge Jackson, when confirmed, will be the first Black woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court. I look forward to her confirmation, and seeing Justice Jackson on the bench.”

Jackson has been confirmed by the United States Senate for various appointments on three separate occasions, including confirmation to be a circuit court judge on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. President Biden nominated Jackson at a ceremony at the White House on Friday.
