Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the Declaration of Independence of the United States on July 4, 1776. On that day, the 13 colonies from Great Britain claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States.
Each year on the fourth of July, Americans celebrate this historic event with fireworks, parades, barbecues, family reunions and many other festivities. Although COVID-19 has prevented many large celebrations from taking place this year, we know the 4th will still be a day of fun and fireworks for many.
If you plan to stay home and celebrate with a cookout and fireworks of your own, please use caution and follow these recommended safety tips.
Grill Safety:
1. Only use grills outdoors, specifically away from your home, deck railings, and overhanging branches
2. Keep children and pets away. Enforce a 3 foot grilling zone rule
3. Never leave your grill unattended
4. Be sure to keep your grill clean to avoid any flare up's from the fire
Campfire Safety:
1. Do not build a fire around dangerous materials, power lines, buildings, vehicles or dry grass
2. Never leave a fire unattended and always keep it tamed
3. Never burn dangerous materials such as aerosol cans or glass
4. Set a safe 3 foot perimeter around your fire, away from flammable materials such as trash and leaves
5. Supervise children like you would at a pool and teach them fire safety
6. Extinguish your fire properly
Water Safety:
1. Be alert when watching children
2. Only wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket
3. Check weather and water conditions
4. Don't drink and drive, even on a boat
5. Only swim in designated areas
6. Ensure your water craft is stocked with appropriate safety gear
Sun Safety:
1. Drink Plenty of Fluids
2. Watch for signs of heatstroke
3. Always wear sunscreen and reapply often
4. Protect yourself from harmful UV rays by wearing a hat and sunglasses
Firework Safety:
1. Parental Guidance is advised with BOTH fireworks and sparklers for young children and teens
2. Never place any part of your body directly over a firework and ALWAYS back up a safe distance after it has been lit
3. Keep a bucket or hose handy in case of fire
4. Use fireworks outdoors ONLY and in an open space
5. DO NOT point fireworks towards homes or people
6. Obey your local laws
7. Keep spectators at a safe distance
8. Read all directions and labels
Lastly, keep in mind the social distancing rules mandated by our Governor. If traveling, always wear your seat belt and DO NOT drink and drive.
