For Spring Hill’s Matthew Bruce, his senior year is concluding with some major accomplishments and bright prospects as he prepares for graduation. A season that began with uncertainty because of COVID19 regulations and restrictions is now ending with celebration and optimism. Matthew was selected for his district’s All-Conference, making his last basketball season one to remember. Coach Tyler Welch said Matthew’s versatility as a player and his dedication to the team are why Matthew has been invaluable to this program. “Matthew has a complete game. He’s a big guy who can rebound or knock down a three ball; we can put him around the rim or put him on the outside. He does well everywhere we put him.” said Welch. “Matthew’s leadership is what we will miss the most. Just his presence motivated his teammates to excel. They respected him and looked up to him, on and off the court.”

Matthew said he was surprised and humbled to find out about his All-Conference selection, and he was proud to be able to represent Spring Hill. Matthew said, “In our conference, we have a lot of really talented players, so to get this was such an honor. This is where I grew up. It's nice to be able to give back to the community who loves me and has watched me grow.” Matthew said one of his greatest motivations was his coach. He credits Coach Welch with teaching his team not just how to play, but also how to be good people.

Making All-Conference is not Matthews’s only achievement this year. He was also selected to be an FCA All-Star Representative for Spring Hill. He was chosen to be a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club. Also, Matthew is a long-time member of the youth group at Bethany Baptist Church. He will be an honor graduate at Spring Hill’s graduation next month. 

As he finishes out this stellar senior year, Matthew looks forward to the next step in his journey.  He recently received the Honors Scholarship to attend UAHT. After earning an associate degree in general education at UAHT, he plans to attend UAMS on a pre-med track and pursue a degree in nuclear medicine. Even though he is going to miss playing basketball and having classes with friends at school, Matthew says he is ready to move on and see what happens next. For this exceptional student and promising young leader, more great things are sure to come.
