Statement from Arkansas Democrats on the Arkansas Supreme Court Abortion Amendment Ruling
LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas Democrats stand with the 101,000+ voters who signed the petition to restore common sense access to abortion in our state. We join them in frustration and disappointment that the Arkansas Supreme Court has blocked it from the ballot in November. "The MAGA Republicans’ total abortion ban has brought to light countless stories of women and girls who have been harmed by this extreme policy, which makes no exceptions for rape, incest, child victims, or mothers in danger," said Grant Tennille, Chair of the Democratic Party of Arkansas. "This no-exceptions ban is too extreme, and voters deserved the opportunity to vote for common-sense access and exceptions. Republicans know their extreme views are unpopular; that’s why they repeatedly used their power to cheat Arkansans out of the opportunity to let their voices be heard." Even though the Arkansas abortion amendment won’t be on the ballot, Democrats who support abortion access, common-sense exceptions, and respecting the personal, private health care choices of every Arkansan will be. This includes Democratic candidate John Pagan, running against anti-abortion extremist Republican John Thurston, the Secretary of State who initially blocked the amendment in the first place. We urge voters who prefer common-sense solutions for a better Arkansas to vote for John Pagan and all Democratic candidates on your ballot, and against MAGA extremism. Democrats are working for a healthier, safer Arkansas for every woman and girl. This includes abortion access, and Arkansans deserve better than the Republicans who think they know better than you do about your own private choices.
