SWARK Service Spotlight: City of Hope Sanitation Collection
SWARK.Today would like to recognize those men and women whose hard work makes a difference in the quality of life of our community. Public service can be accomplished through government agencies, non-profit organizations, or even private entities, but they all have the same goal: providing a benefit to the community and improving the lives of its citizens. In this spotlight, we recognize the crew at the City of Hope’s Sanitation Collection Department.

As a part of Hope’s Public Works Department, Sanitation Collection has a myriad of responsibilities that assist in the daily lives of city residents. Every week, this crew covers 10.2 square miles to collect both residential and commercial solid waste, and then they transport all of it to the landfill. But that’s not where the job ends. They are also responsible for mosquito control, limb pickup, rubbish collection, and the organization of commercial dumpsters. This team also gives out trash bags to local residents; plus, they will even pick up trash on the side of the road when they can. These tasks are vital in safeguarding the public from potential disease as well as safety hazards.

Sanitation Superintendent Nathaniel “Peaches” Holyfield, Jr., says he is most proud of the workers in this department. “Our guys take pride in what they do,” Holyfield says. “They care about this city and want it to be clean and healthy.” Holyfield said that the Sanitation crew has two important slogans that motivate their endeavors. He says first, “We are like the post office; we pick up trash in the rain, shine, sleet, or snow; it doesn’t matter how cold it gets, we still go.” The second slogan, he says, is “if it doesn’t grow, it must go” which means if there’s rubbish on the side of the road and not something that’s growing out of the ground, then it needs to be picked up.

The work of this department is not only critical for the health and safety of Hope citizens, but it also contributes greatly to local economic development and tourism, both of which are integral components in our way of life. A clean and healthy town will bring in both potential businesses and tourists, driving the economy for citizens.

Join SWARK.Today as we salute the team at the City of Hope’s Sanitation Collection Department for the dedication and diligence they strive toward every day.
