As a significant component of Hope’s public services, the Street Department manages a vast array of responsibilities essential for the city’s functionality and safety. This diligent team maintains the city’s impressive 112 miles of public streets within the 10.2 square miles of Hope, constantly working on numerous projects that benefit both the city and its residents.
Their crucial tasks include comprehensive pothole patching, crack sealing, and asphalt paving, all vital for ensuring smooth and safe roadways. They also perform regular street cleaning, culvert installation, and critical stormwater drainage and maintenance, which are essential for preventing flooding and maintaining public safety. The department is also involved in various street construction projects, seasonal leaf removal, and the maintenance of the Industrial Park Railroad spur and city ditches.
Furthermore, they are responsible for crucial sidewalk repair and replacement, ensuring pedestrian safety and accessibility throughout Hope. Last but definitely not least, this department is responsible for helping all other city departments with their projects. Whether it be equipment operations, general maintenance, construction labor assistance, or any other requests, the Street Department lends a hand wherever they are needed.
Street Superintendent Kenneth Harvel commends the crew's tireless efforts: “My guys work really hard and take pride in what they do for this city and its residents.” This commitment is further bolstered by their impressive cross-training initiative. Harvel proudly explains, “Every guy that I have can run every piece of equipment we have. One is even cross-trained for my job, so if something happens to me, he can come in and run the operation for a day, week, or a month. That helps a whole lot with having such a wide range of duties.” This versatility ensures continuous, high-quality service.
The work of the Hope Street Department is not only vital for the health and safety of Hope citizens but also contributes significantly to local economic development and tourism. A city with well-maintained streets and efficient infrastructure is more appealing to potential businesses and visitors, thereby driving the local economy.
